A pregnant care worker, who was forced to travel an additional 3 hours a day to a new workplace after the closure of her original place of work, has secured paid medical leave with the support of GMB.
The added travel time to her 12-hour night shifts was causing significant stress to herself and her baby.
After speaking to her union representative, she was advised to request a paid medical suspension under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Act. This requires employers to manage the risks to pregnant workers.
Within a week of being made aware of her rights and speaking to her employer, she was granted the paid medical suspension.
Rachael Baylis, GMB Regional Equalities Officer, said:
“Many workers don’t know what rights they may have under existing law – particularly in the case of pregnancy.
“Being a member of GMB entitles you to expert advice and support to ensure that you as a worker can know and use your rights. GMB is a trade union for everyone.
“I am delighted for our member, who can now be sure of her and her unborn child’s safety, and I wish them all the best.”
