Peterborough Council considers insourcing vital services following pay dispute

GMB Union has welcomed a review from Peterborough City Council, recommending that it takes vital services back in house.
Services including recycling and waste collection, street cleaning, parks maintenance, and school transport were outsourced and now sit with Peterborough Limited – a company wholly owned by the Council.
Peterborough Limited has been at the centre of a pay dispute with GMB and its members after they rejected an offer that would have seen them paid just pennies over the National Living Wage.
GMB – which represents most of the members involved in the dispute - has been calling for the Council to insource these workers to help reach a resolution.
Gordon White, GMB Regional Organiser, said:
“We welcome this recommendation, and we’re pleased the Council have heeded our calls to insource key services.
“These services constitute most of the contact between the Council and the electorate, so it makes sense to bring them back under Council control.
“In the meantime, we will continue to use all available avenues to resolve the current pay dispute.
“We will also work with the Council to fully understand their plans for these services whilst protecting and improving terms and conditions for all our members.”
