GMB Union welcomes reprieve for early years day care in City of London

The decision to keep the early years day care service at the Aldgate School Children’s Centre will save jobs and preserve an invaluable service for parents and children.
GMB welcomes a decision by the City of London Corporation to retain the early years day care service at the Aldgate School Children’s Centre.
The Centre provides affordable childcare to working parents.
The Corporation had given notice to the school and parents that the service would cease in August 2025.
GMB, which represents staff at the school, campaigned with parents to keep this invaluable service open. This campaign included a petition that received almost 1,400 signatures.
After GMB wrote to the members of the Community & Children’s Services Committee, they agreed to provide funding until August 2026.
Anna Lee, GMB Regional Organiser said:
“We welcome the decision to extend the day care provision until August 2026.
“The staff who work at the Children’s Centre provide invaluable support to parents and children. It has been incredibly stressful not knowing whether they will still have a job by August.
“We are glad their jobs are safe into 2026, but we need a long-term solution to end the uncertainty for staff, parents, and children.
“The Children’s Centre is the heart of this community, and we call upon the City of London Corporation to ensure that it continues to serve children and parents for years to come.”
A GMB member working in the service said:
“We are extremely grateful for the ongoing support from the families and community.
“However, this experience has made us feel greatly undervalued as staff."
