GMB give guarded welcome to report into bullying and harassment of House of Commons staff
More policies are not the only answer, says GMB London
GMB, the trade union for House of Commons and MPs staff, have given a guarded welcome to the report into Bullying and Harassment of House of Commons Staff, by Dame Laura Cox DBE published this week.
The union have called for immediate action to be taken and not waiting a further 6 months to tackle the issue.
Will Conway, GMB staff representative in the Palace of Westminster said:
“Sadly too many people working in Parliament will recognise the disturbing incidences of bullying and harassment cited throughout Dame Laura Cox’s report. The main theme, however is the appalling dereliction of the duty of care by senior management leading to this culture being deemed acceptable.
“Politicians have to call time immediately on the abuse of power which has become tolerated by the powers that be in Westminster and action must be taken now to make the Independent Complaints Procedure effective - not in six months time - as suggested by the Leader of the House Andrea Leadsom MP.”
Warren Kenny, GMB London Regional Secretary added
“More policies are not the only answer, we need proper enforcement of workers’ rights, protection of vulnerable staff and an independent avenue for complaints both historic and current where the victims are properly supported.”
