GMB London members at Wilko seek to have more hours work to help pay for essentials as part of forthcoming negotiations in the 2018 pay review

As a result of the consultation it is important to put forward a proposal which will include seeking a fair rate of pay and more full time roles for members within Wilko, say GMB London

GMB members employed by Wilko at stores in London and the East of England are asking for the issue of more hours of work per week to be included in the forthcoming negotiations on the 2018 pay and conditions review.

A massive 60% of the members took part in the consultation with members over what matters they want on the agenda for the pay review. All the feedback from members is being forwarded to the national negotiators.

Keith Dixon, GMB Regional Organiser said:

“As a result of the consultation it is important to put forward a proposal which will include seeking a fair rate of pay and more full time roles for members within Wilko.

“I was humbled to find that included within the forms were a number of personal letters addressed to me explaining how the current pay in Wilko is affecting their work and home life.

“These letters included stories of members who have pleaded with the company for extra hours so that they can buy food, buy Christmas presents for their children and pay for electricity at home.

“In addition to these there were also a number of letters which praised Wilko and fellow workers upon the way in which they treat and engage with their team members in work.

“Retail pay has for many years been low compared equivalent roles in other industries; this includes similar roles within distribution depots. Retail has also tried to move towards short contracted shifts instead of full time roles.”

“GMB feel that it is important to stand together and put forward a proposal which will include a fair rate of pay and more full time roles for GMB members within Wilko. This will assist to improve work and home lives for so many.

“To ensure GMB continue to receive your voice during the pay negotiations I would ask you to provide feedback to your GMB Steward in store.

“GMB are looking for every Wilko store to have a GMB Steward to ensure that feedback and assistance can be provided.”
