GMB London Region march outside Asda House to challenge Asda’s retail poverty contract

Asda need to understand the value of their dedicated workforce who have for many years grown Asda to be a multibillion pound profitable business, says GMB London

GMB, the union for Asda workers have arranged for a mass demonstration at Asda House today, Wednesday 14 August, to make Asda understand that the contract they are imposing is unacceptable.

Recently 93% of GMB members within Asda opposed the new contract.

Over recent weeks Asda management have used bullying tactics along with threats towards Asda colleagues in an attempt to force them onto this new contract.

It is time to challenge Asda directly.

Details of the march are as follows:

Wednesday 14 August

12 Noon

Meeting at:

Leeds City Square

Leeds

LS1 2HT

Ending at:

Asda House

Southbank

Great Wilson St

Leeds

LS11 5AD

Keith Dixon, GMB Regional Organiser said:

“GMB feel the company’s contract would result in a devastating impact upon the work life balance, security and income for our GMB Members within Asda.

"Asda need to understand the value of their dedicated workforce who have for many years grown Asda to be a multibillion pound profitable business.

“We have had reports of managers using bullying and threatening behaviour against members by offering false promises, going uninvited to the home of members who are suffering terminal illnesses and even threatening to withhold holidays and sick pay if they do not agree to sign the new contract.

“There is also a report of a manager who was locked within an office and chastised for allowing members on their department to not sign the contract.

“It is despicable that a company the size of Asda would treat their colleagues in such a way.

“It is time that Asda realises that they have lost the respect and support of their workforce and agrees to meet with GMB to negotiate better terms on behalf of the members.

“GMB London Region have coaches from Hendon, Luton, Cambridge and Tilbury attending today and will be part of nearly a thousand strong turnout for the demonstration in Leeds

“Leeds City Council have already reported that they expect major traffic disruption for the day due to the march.

“The demonstration will be addressed by Leeds East MP and Shadow Justice Secretary Richard Burgon before marching down to Asda Head Office.”
