GMB London welcomes go-ahead for Sizewell C new Nuclear Power Station

There will be up to 6,000 jobs in the construction phase in Suffolk and over 20,000 jobs across the whole of the UK in the supply chain says GMB London.

GMB London, the union for energy workers and engineering construction workers, welcomed the go-ahead for Sizewell C new nuclear power station.

Mick Ainsley, GMB London Region Organiser for engineering construction workers in London and East of England, said:

"This is a huge investment in jobs in Suffolk and all across the UK.

“There will be up to 6,000 jobs in construction phase in Suffolk and over 20,000 jobs across the whole of the UK in the supply chain.

“What a contrast this is to the near total lack of new UK-based jobs in the new offshore wind farms. None of the 30,000 steel fabrication jobs needed for 8,000 giant offshore wind turbines are based in the UK. The payment of subsidies to wind farm operators should be linked to using a UK supply chain.

“It is also a welcome boost for new zero carbon emissions electricity capacity in the UK.  It is sobering to realise that of all the current electricity capacity in operation only Sizewell B will be in operation in 2050. Everything else will have to be replaced or developed from scratch."
