Warren Kenny, GMB Regional Secretary said:
"This league table for the annual average earnings for full time workers in the different occupational groups working for employers in London is very instructive.
“It shows the sheer range of pay from the top to the bottom of the pay league. At the top are chief executives and senior officials on £143,323 and at the bottom, sales and other staff in shops on £17,336.
“It is not the full picture as it does not include part time workers or those in the gig economy who most of the time earn much less than the full time shop workers at the bottom of the pay league.
“What these figures show is the importance of income support and housing benefits for those at the bottom of the pay league. As Universal Credit which replaces these benefits is rolled out GMB will continue to monitor the impact on the take home incomes of workers who depend on it to make ends meet".

2] The Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE) is based on a 1% random sample of employee jobs (approximately 300,000 employees) taken from HM Revenue and Customs PAYE records. Information on earnings and hours is obtained from employers and treated confidentially. It covers all employee jobs in all industries and occupations across the whole of the United Kingdom. ASHE does not cover the self-employed nor does it cover employees not paid during the reference period.
3] The occupations listed in the table of official data provided by the Office of National Statistics include 3-digit codes. These codes group occupations, identified by the 4-digit Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) code, into further occupational groups.
