GMB energy workers celebrate a major step forward in securing a just transition to renewable energy.

GMB welcomes the government’s decision to reconsider the proposed ban on gas boilers post-2035.

This decision ensures that the transition to clean energy remains practical and considers the voices of those who keep the energy system running.

In October, GMB’s energy workers were joined by over 50 MPs for a pivotal lobby of Parliament. This event brought together GMB members and representatives from across the energy sector—gas fitters, electricians, nuclear power plant operators, and more—to discuss the challenges we face as we work toward the government’s ambitious net-zero goals.

Our message to lawmakers was clear: workers are the backbone of the energy sector and the driving force behind its future. Every day, energy workers keep the lights on, ensure homes stay warm, power critical infrastructure, and boost our economy.

A successful transition to renewable energy must be both achievable and fair, protecting livelihoods while maintaining the vital services our communities and industries depend on.

Tony Tanushi, Regional Organiser for Energy, said:

“At GMB, we remain steadfast advocates for a worker-focused approach to renewable energy.

Clean power presents incredible opportunities to create high-skilled, stable jobs, and we are committed to ensuring this potential is fully realized.

“Together, we are building a brighter, greener, and more inclusive future for the energy sector and the millions of people who rely on it every day.”
