Thames Water sewage spills and proposed bill hikes ‘stink’
GMB London Region has reacted today to news that Thames Water sewage spills have risen 40%, while the company seeks to hike customer charges.
Thames Water is asking permission from the regulator, Ofwat, to jack up bills by 59% to cover its mounting debts.
It expects customers to pay more despite the company’s disastrous performance, including its admission of a massive rise in sewage discharges.
In a further insult to customers, Thames Water’s CEO has defended executive bonuses and refused to rule out taking a payout for himself.
Cliff Roney, GMB Rep and water worker, said:
“The public are calling for urgent action on Thames Water before it’s too late.
“Is it any surprise that people are fed up? Thames Water bosses are yet again putting their hands out for bonuses while clogging our waterways with sewage and asking ordinary people to pay higher bills.
“Their business practices stink and the public deserves better. The fat cats have had their day – it’s time to bring Thames Water back into the public sector.”
