GMB Union and Chris Hinchliff MP have raised concerns that 30 workers at the Johnson Matthey site in Royston, Hertfordshire, remain suspended following a walkout prompted by health and safety issues.

They downed tools after refusing to work in unsafe conditions, which is the second time workers on the site have taken such action.

GMB has since learned that some of these workers now face the prospect of dismissal due to Johnson Matthey refusing to let them back on site.

The site, described by one worker as ‘the worst site I have ever been on’, has seen a host of serious issues, including anti-union behaviour, multiple health and safety breaches, and the tragic suicides of two workers.

John Colquhoun, GMB Senior Organiser, said:

“Just as we thought things could not get any worse, a consultation has been opened to dismiss workers on the site.

“Unions are still being denied access to the site and staff morale is very low.

“We are urging Johnson Matthey to re-instate site passes to all affected members and to work with us and the other contractors to improve conditions on the site.”

Chris Hinchliff MP, Member of Parliament for North East Hertfordshire, said:

“I am very concerned to have been informed by the GMB that the 30 members of Bilfinger and BGEN staff remain suspended from the Johnson Matthey site for challenging health and safety issues.

“Construction sites should have the highest standards of health and safety, and whistleblowing ought to be applauded, not punished.

“I urge all parties involved to work together on securing a swift and fair resolution to this as a matter of urgency, lifting any suspensions, and addressing outstanding issues."
