Too many people develop bladder cancer ‘simply because they were doing their job’ says GMB Union

GMB London Region has today [Sunday 8 June] announced the establishment of a Bladder Cancer Register to identify members who have developed the disease in the last three years.

Research suggests that 6 per cent of bladder cancer cases in the UK are caused by exposure to cancer-causing chemicals in the workplace.

GMB has launched the register in a bid to understand how many of our members are affected by this disease due to workplace exposure and assess whether they have a personal injury claim.

A wide range of professions are at risk, including healthcare workers, drivers, cleaners, painter decorators, hairdressers, food preparation workers, and people working in manufacturing.

GMB has campaigned with the HSE for stricter controls on chemical exposure in these industries and works collaboratively with the charity Fight Bladder Cancer to raise awareness among its members.

Peter Hall, Senior Officer for Health and Safety, said:

“GMB has long been involved in raising awareness about the link between workplace exposures and bladder cancer.

“We are taking this work a step further to ensure members who have developed this disease simply because they were doing their job are compensated.”
