Batley and Spen By-election Thursday 1st July
In two weeks, on 1st July, the voters of Batley and Spen will be going to the polls to elect a new MP. Kim Leadbeater, the sister of the previous MP, Jo Cox, who was tragically murdered five years ago, as the Labour Party candidate.

Kim Leadbeater, the sister of the previous MP, Jo Cox, who was tragically murdered five years ago, is the Labour Party candidate. Kim is defending a Labour majority of approximately 3,500.
If you do want to spend a day supporting Kim the GMB members who work for MPs in the House of Commons have organised a Team GMB awayday on Saturday 26th June. Meeting at King Cross station to get the 08:33 train from Kings Cross. If you are going from other parts of the country or by other means of transport the alternative meeting point is Batley Train Station at 12.00 noon on 26th June. For those who cannot get up to Yorkshire you can still do your bit to get Kim elected by joining a Labour Unions virtual phone bank on Wednesday 23rd June at 7.00pm.
They have some great speakers lined up to kick the event off, including Kim herself, Mick Whelan, from ASLEF and Chair of Labour Unions and the Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves MP.
Don’t worry if you have never canvassed on the telephone before. There will be people on the call to guide you and a script to follow. To participate you will need a with a phone, a laptop or tablet and an internet connection, but there is no cost to your phone bill, whether you use a landline or mobile.
You can give as little or a much of your time as you can, so don’t think you have to stay on the call until the end. You will need to be a Labour Party member to register and log in.
